But increased awareness of the damage that can be done to a person’s health by lifting and moving loads has led to more of us using this equipment at work. A Hydraulic Jack Can Lift More Weight With Less Effort
In many UK companies in many different sectors, the use of lifting and moving equipment is part of everyday activity for the business. Equipment for lifting in industry might best be described as any equipment used to lift or lower loads, including any attachments used to anchor or support those loads. Examples of such lifting equipment include cranes, fork-lift trucks, vehicle inspection ramps, patient-lifting hoists, freight lifts, lorry tail lifts, ropes and pulleys used to raise loads and axle stands. Lifting accessories include ropes, chains or straps. To lift heavy equipment or loads, a jack is often the tool of choice. The jack used to change the wheel on a car is a mechanical jack, often called a scissor jack, which uses a screw thread to lift the car. As cars are heavy, this takes considerable effort on the part of the motorist, which is why in part when you take your car to a garage, they will often use a trolley jack instead. This is a type of hydraulic jack which will lift far heavier weights with much less effort. In industry, a hydraulic toe jack is used for lifting heavy machinery during its installation in factories, shipyards, plant construction sites or bridge building.
A Toe Jack Can Lift Heavy Industrial Machinery
As noted, a toe jack is most often used in a manufacturing setting when installing large pieces of industrial machinery. This scenario may occur when altering or setting up production lines, for instance. Planned and carried out correctly, machinery can be safely raised or lowered onto or off load-moving skates. Plant equipment can therefore be moved in one piece, rather than it needing to be taken to pieces and reassembled in the new location. This represents a large time and cost benefit to the manufacturer. A toe lift jack is a heavy-duty, industrial jack designed for lifting loads with very low or high clearances. When using a jack to lift heavy machinery, planning for a safe lift is paramount. Under UK legislation, all jacks supplied to industry must clearly indicate the maximum capacity they can accommodate; and the lift planners must ensure that the machinery weighs less than the capacity of the jack they intend to use. Jacks that can lift up to 50 tons are available; however, they may well be too big and bulky for smaller lifting operations. Where the load is, for example, lower than 2 tons, a smaller and more compact 2 ton jack might be more appropriate.
Heavy Loads Can Be Moved On Machine Skates
Using appropriately rated jacks, we can now safely raise and lower industrial machinery and other heavy loads. However, we still need to move them from one place to another. This is where machinery skates and rollers are employed. Once a jack or jacks have lifted the machinery or other load, a set of wheels can be placed under it and the load can be lowered onto the wheels. The jack or jacks can then be lowered and removed and the load can be moved to its new location on wheels. When the load reaches its destination, it can be jacked up, the wheels removed and then finally lowered into its final position before removing the jacks. These specially designed sets of wheels are called machine skates. Once installed under the load, the skates generally have a handle or handles that can be used to pull or tow what it is carrying from one place to another. As with jacks, UK regulations state that all the skates must be marked to indicate the maximum load they can support. It is the job of project planners to ensure that the weight of the load does not exceed the maximum rating of the wheels.
Moving Skates Are Available For Different Loads
There are different moving skates available for loads of different sizes and weights from 6 to 220 tons, and types are available that can even be used to move shipping containers. There are also types available for specialist applications. For example, to rotate machinery, equipment or other loads, rotational skates can be used. These allow the load to be ‘spun’ round rather than turned; and are a distinct advantage when working in a confined space or where very precise positioning is necessary. To further increase the flexibility of heavy equipment moving skates, there are now powered versions available, reducing the need for pulling or towing. These are typically battery powered and can either be controlled by an operator using a control module connected to the skate by long wires; or more innovatively, controlled via a remote-control handset.
